SEO myths and dead features guide
Choose an SEO Audit That Answers Your Question
Match a technical, content, or AI answer audit to the problem you need to solve, and turn its findings into verified, prioritized work.
On this page
Choose an audit by the question it can answer. A crawl of your site, an inspection of WordPress settings, a content review, and a sample of assistant answers examine different evidence. Calling all of them an “SEO audit” can hide the distinction.
Before running a tool, write the problem in plain terms. A page missing from search, a decline in inquiries, and an incorrect business description need different starting points.
Start with the observed problem
If a page is missing from search, investigate access and indexing. If visits declined, compare the affected pages and queries before assuming a technical fault. If people arrive but do not inquire, review the offer and the route to completing the inquiry.
If an assistant gives an incorrect answer, preserve its wording and sources. That is an answer investigation; a site crawl alone will not show what the assistant said.
Google’s minimum technical requirements cover crawler access, a successful page response, and indexable content. Meeting them establishes eligibility, not a guarantee of indexing. Google Search technical requirements, checked September 13, 2026.
Use that distinction when interpreting a clean technical report. It can rule out some detected faults without proving that every business objective has been met.
Understand what each audit can inspect
An external crawl examines the URLs and responses it reaches under its configuration. Review its starting points, limits, rendering settings, and exclusions before treating the output as a complete inventory.
An inspection inside WordPress can examine settings and content available to the account running it. That can help locate a configuration decision, but the published page still needs checking.
A content review asks whether the page answers the intended reader’s question, supports its claims, and makes the next step clear. It requires judgment about the business and the reader.
An assistant answer review records responses to a defined sample of questions. Its conclusions apply to that sample and context, not every possible conversation.
Ask the person supplying an audit to state its scope and omissions. A list of checks is more informative than an unexplained overall grade.
Compare the report with a real page
Choose a few important URLs representing the site’s different page types. Include the page where the problem was observed, then a relevant homepage, service page, article, or product page.
For each finding, inspect the output that produced it. If a title is flagged, read the actual title and page. If a URL is missing from a crawl, determine whether the tool excluded it or the site failed to link to it.
Search Console’s URL Inspection tool separates indexed information from a live test. Google also explains that a successful live test does not cover every indexing condition or guarantee inclusion. URL Inspection documentation, checked September 13, 2026.
Keep the date and version of the evidence. A report from before a fix should not be used as proof that the live page is still wrong.
Do not treat writing checks as decisions
A missing description, a repeated heading, and an incomplete service explanation are different findings. Investigate each before applying a bulk change.
A writing tool can point you toward a passage to review. It cannot know an undocumented exclusion, decide whether a claim is true, or establish that a visitor understood the offer.
Likewise, a short page may answer a narrow question fully. A long page may avoid the answer. Judge the task and evidence instead of padding the page to satisfy a count.
Our content-writing guide covers that editorial review. Product configuration instructions belong in the WP Visibility documentation.
Add AI checks where they answer a real question
Google’s guidance retains established SEO requirements for its AI search features. It does not require a separate set of special technical optimizations. Google’s AI features guidance, checked September 13, 2026.
An additional answer review can still be useful when you need to check citations, descriptions, or a specific customer question. Keep its findings alongside technical and content work rather than treating it as their replacement.
Finish with a queue someone can complete
Every actionable finding needs a URL, evidence, consequence, proposed correction, owner, and verification step. Mark uncertain findings as requiring investigation.
Prioritize confirmed faults affecting important pages. Avoid scheduling a large batch of cosmetic edits ahead of a broken route to contact or a verified indexing restriction.
An audit is complete when it makes the next decision clearer. For a traffic problem, continue with diagnosing rankings and visits. For an incorrect answer, use the business-description correction process.
