Understand Discovery That Does Not Start on Your Website

Map how people encounter your business through search, assistant answers, and other sources, then improve the information they need before contacting you.

A prospective customer can learn about your business without visiting its website first. They might read a review, receive a recommendation, compare a listing, or ask an assistant a question. Your job is to make the important information available and understand what evidence you can collect about that journey.

You do not need to predict the disappearance of search to plan for these routes. Start with the decisions a person must make before they contact or buy from you.

Separate the interface from the work behind it

A person using an assistant may not open a search results page themselves. That does not mean no search occurred. OpenAI documents that ChatGPT search can send rewritten queries to search providers. ChatGPT search documentation, checked September 13, 2026.

Google’s AI search features also provide links to supporting sites. An answer interface can therefore lead to a website visit as well as help someone without one. Google’s AI features guidance, checked September 13, 2026.

Avoid using “zero search” as a technical description of these systems. The observable behavior is that someone may receive information without visiting your page during that interaction.

Map one real buying decision

Choose one product or service. Write down the questions a prospective customer needs answered before taking the next step: what it does, whether it fits, where it is available, what it requires, and how to proceed.

Then map the places where someone could find those answers. Include your own pages and relevant outside sources, such as a marketplace entry or business profile.

Treat this as a working map until you have evidence. Do not assume that every customer follows the same sequence or uses the same assistant.

An illustrative buyer might hear a name from a colleague, check a comparison, ask a question about compatibility, and visit the requirements page before contacting the business. Another might go directly from the recommendation to a phone call. Both routes make accurate information useful.

Map a possible discovery journey. Discover: A person encounters a relevant reference. Check: They inspect details on one or more sources. Act: They contact, visit, buy, or keep looking.
Illustrative journey, not observed customer data. People can revisit stages or act without visiting your website; use evidence before assigning credit.

Make each source useful on its own

Review the information available at each step. A short listing should identify the offer and point to current details. A product page should state requirements and exclusions. A contact page should explain what someone needs to provide.

Write important facts so they remain understandable when read separately. Include the subject and relevant conditions in the explanation. “Included on this plan” is unclear if the plan is never named nearby.

Do not compress everything into a promotional sentence. Someone deciding whether a service fits needs enough detail to rule it in or out.

For the description itself, use the business facts review. For a local visit, use the local information check.

Ask customers without forcing an attribution story

Where it fits the inquiry process, ask an optional, open question such as “What helped you decide to contact us?” Let people describe the route in their own words.

Record the answer as reported. If someone says an assistant helped, ask what they wanted to know only when it is useful and appropriate. Do not turn a support conversation into a marketing interrogation.

A remembered source is evidence of that person’s account. It may not describe every step or identify the first exposure. Keep it separate from analytics attribution.

Never fill gaps in the record by assigning unknown traffic to AI. An incomplete account is more useful than a precise-looking explanation you cannot substantiate.

Compare different kinds of evidence

Website analytics can describe recorded visits and actions. An inquiry record can tell you what the prospect said. A sample of assistant answers can show what appeared in those tests.

Read them together without pretending they are interchangeable. A citation does not establish a sale. A sale whose source is unknown does not establish that citations had no influence.

Use the citation reporting guide when you need a repeatable answer sample. Retain the questions and dates so the observation remains inspectable.

Improve the weakest information step

Choose a gap that affects the decision: unclear compatibility, an outdated listing, a missing booking instruction, or an answer that points to the wrong page.

Correct the source, verify the public wording, and record the change. Ask whether the revised information helps a person complete the task, then review any relevant observations over time.

Keep the website useful even when it is not the first stop. It should supply current detail, evidence, and a reliable next action for someone arriving with a question partly answered elsewhere.
